Reminiscent of a bejeweled Orb, instead of a customary cross mounted top it, this one has a soft violet blue tanzanite cut in a bullet style cabochon. A band of delicious purplish Anthill garnets and golden balls of granulation floats around it like miniature moons.

Made in recycled 22k yellow gold, responsibly sourced tanzanite (.93ctw) and garnets (.15cyw). Size 6.5. Made to order.

Violet Orb Ring #4

The Orb is an ancient symbol of imperial authority, first adopted by the Romans and later embraced by European monarchs. In the Roman Empire, the sphere represented the cosmos and the emperor’s role as Jupiter’s earthly representative. Early Christians adapted this imagery by placing a cross atop the globe, and it became a standard Christian emblem of authority from the Middle Ages onward.

A rather well-known Orb is the Sovereign's Orb, part of the British Crown Jewels, used in coronations since 1661. Royal goldsmith Robert Viner created the 30 cm hollow gold sphere, set with 9 emeralds, 18 rubies, 9 sapphires, 365 diamonds, 375 pearls, an amethyst and a glass stone - it weighed about 1.32 kg or about 2.9lbs.

I decided to make a small series of bejewelled Romanesque orbs, with bullet style cabochon gems set at the center. This one has a soft violet blue tanzanite cut in a high cabochon style. A band of delicious purplish Anthill garnets and golden spheres of granulation orbit around it like miniature moons.

Beautiful as a solitaire, or even better (in my opinion), stack with our Doric band.
